Back to School…

16 Sep

It’s been a while since I last raced at Cascade in July, but theFloridaracing season has picked back up again recently. The school semester has begun again, which has limited my ability to travel to further races. I’m not finished racing for the season, but I’ll most likely be racing regionally in FL until the end of the season.

A few weeks ago Winston, my teammate, and I raced the Great Nocatee Stage Race in Ponte Vedra, FL. Winston made the early break in the road race and ended up 3rd on the stage. I made my way into a chase group and won the sprint from it to come in 5th.  Later that day we took first and third in the time trial, with Winston taking first and I took third. After the crit, Winston ended up winning the stage race and I came in third. We had five podium appearances that weekend.

Classes have been going well, but they have been keeping me busy with studying and homework. I have two semesters left until I graduate, so my collegiate days are coming close to an end. I do still get one more crack at collegiate road nationals though.

Two weekends ago I raced the Labor Day weekend in Brooksville,FL.It was another hotFloridaroad race in the middle of the day. The attacks came early from the gun and a break of six got up the road. I soloed up to the break on the second lap and rotated with the group until the field was closing in with a little over a lap to go. I attacked the break and got away solo. I was able to stay away for the remaining fifteen miles and increase my lead to a little over two minutes on the next group to finish. The next day was a crit in an abandoned housing development. Again, the attacks came early and often with the two bigger teams being aggressive. I missed a few good moves and ended up pulling the field around, because I couldn’t get away. We finally pulled the breaks back and I countered with three other riders. We worked together to open up a good gap with seven laps to go. I tried to get away from this break again, but everyone was too fresh, so it came down to a sprint where I got third. Two podiums in two days of racing solo isn’t too bad.

This past weekend I did the seventh installment of the Gainesville TT challenge. It is a 15k time trial that takes place in Brooker, about an hour ride fromGainesville. There was a good turnout at the event, which consisted of Merckx and Aero categories. I set the new course record for the Aero category and was the fastest on the day with a time of 19:33 (28.6mph average).  Well, I’m off to go get some more homework done.
